The Los Angeles Chargers are in a bit of a rebuilding mode, but they have identified which player they want to be the cornerstone of the franchise. The Chargers and defensive end Joey Bosa have agreed to a five-year contract extension according to sources.
Bosa will now be a member of the Los Angeles Chargers for the next six seasons, and the team will be looking to build around him. The deal is a five-year, $135 million deal that will make Bosa the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.
At the time of signing, $78 million is guaranteed, and the total contract includes $102 million guaranteed. This is the first time that the Chargers have ever awarded a contract worth more than $100 million.
The Chargers selected Bosa with the third overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, and he had been the leader of the defense since joining the team. There were some concerns that Bosa would hold out of training camp, but the defensive star was in camp on Tuesday.
Los Angeles has several other holes in its roster, but they are now set at one of the most important positions in the NFL. Bosa has averaged 0.8 sacks per game since joining the league, which is fourth-best in the league since 2016.
Can Chargers Get to Nine Wins?
FanDuel Sportsbook has released their win total odds for each team in the NFL, and the Chargers have a very interesting line. Most experts believe that the Chargers will be “average” in 2020, and FanDuel Sportsbook has set the Chargers’ win total at 8.0 games.
The odds for each side of this bet are set at -110, which means it’s up to the bettor to make a tough decision. Nine wins could very easily get the Chargers in the playoffs this season, but that might be easier said than done.
Playoff Odds Don’t Look Good
FanDuel Sportsbook is also offering odds for each team to make or miss the playoffs in 2020. FanDuel is not giving the Chargers a ton of hope to make the 2020 NFL Playoffs, although Los Angeles has better odds than some other teams.
Odds for the Los Angeles Chargers to make the playoffs in 2020 are set at +148, while FanDuel has their odds to miss the playoffs set at -182. There could be a huge payout if Los Angeles can get to nine wins and reach the playoff field.
Chargers Not Likely to Factor in AFC
FanDuel Sportsbook also has released its odds to win each conference in the NFL, and the Chargers are way down on the list in the AFC. FanDuel has the Chargers at +1700 to win the AFC, the ninth-best odds in that conference.
Los Angeles does have the second-best odds out of all four teams in the AFC West Division, which could provide fans some hope. These odds will likely change as the season gets closer to kickoff.
