Most of the playoff races in Major League Baseball are already locked up, but that isn’t the case in the National League West. The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants have been in a battle all season long, and that will continue into the final week.
Heading into Sunday, it is the Giants that hold a two-game lead over the Dodgers for the NL West title. San Francisco became the first team to reach 100 wins, but Los Angeles needs just one win to join them.
San Francisco will finish the season with a six-game homestand against NL West teams. The Giants begin the final week by hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks before the San Diego Padres come to town.
The Dodgers will begin the final week of the season by hosting the San Diego Diego Padres, and the final series of the season will come against the Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee already has a playoff spot wrapped up, and that could work in favor of Los Angeles.
NL Pennant Betting Odds
It should come as no surprise that the Dodgers and Giants are the two betting favorites to win the National League, but there is a pretty clear gap between the teams. The Dodgers are currently being offered at +155 to win the NL, while the Giants are next on the list at +290.
The rest of the National League is way down the list as it appears to be a two-team race. The Milwaukee Brewers (+320), Atlanta Braves (+800), and the St. Louis Cardinals (+1200) round out the top five.
The San Diego Padres were once the second-largest favorite to win the NL pennant this season, but they are no longer even on the board.
World Series Odds
The one constant when it comes to MLB betting lines is that the Los Angeles Dodgers have been the betting favorites to win the World Series since the preseason. The rest of the list has seen plenty of change, but oddsmakers like the Dodgers’ chances when it comes to the postseason.
Currently, the Dodgers are listed at +300 to win the World Series, and the Houston Astros are next on the list at +480. The San Francisco Giants are still in the mix at +700, and winning the NL West would give them a much better chance.
It was widely assumed that the San Diego Padres were going to make the NL Playoffs in 2021 after spending a ton of money to improve that starting rotation. Once the Giants got off to a fast start, it appeared as if the NL West would have three playoff teams.
San Diego was leading the second Wild Card spot for much of the season, but the St. Louis Cardinals have taken complete control. St. Louis is currently in the middle of a 15-game winning streak, and it would be a major upset to see them not clinch a playoff berth.
This means it would be the Cardinals against the loser of the NL West race in the one-game playoff to reach the NL Playoffs.
