The San Francisco 49ers took care of the New York Jets on the road on Sunday with a 31-13 win. However, they were not fortunate enough with the number of injuries they saw happen. Four 49ers went down with injuries in Week 2, including Nick Bosa and Soloman Thomas, who could out for the remainder of 2020.
Jimmy Garoppolo and Raheem Mostert both went down with injuries as well. Garoppolo has an ankle injury that could take four to six weeks to heal, and Mostert could miss a few weeks after suffering a sprained MCL.
Week 2 saw a numerous amount of players injured across the NFL, and San Francisco was the most affected. This does not include George Kittle, Richard Sherman, and Dee Ford, who missed Week 2.
The 49ers were fortunate to be playing the lowly New York Jets on Sunday even with everyone hurt. However, they might not be as fortunate moving forward.
The 49ers are a mess with injuries, and none of them are players you want to see hurt. As of writing this, Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas will most likely miss the rest of the season. The San Francisco defensive line has been depleted by two of their best talents, which will not help moving forward this season.
On top of that, the 49ers lost key offensive players as well. Jimmy Garoppolo will miss four to six weeks along with Raheem Mostert in the backfield. George Kittle did not play on Sunday, and there is no telling if he will be ready to go in their Week 3 matchup against the Giants.
Richard Sherman also missed Week 2 after playing in their first game, so he will be someone to watch this week on the injury report. Rookie Brandon Aiyuk missed Week 1 but did play last Sunday, which should help whoever fills Garoppolo’s shoes for the next month.
With so many key players out for San Francisco, the odds are certainly going to shift across the board. Already, the Niners went from a 6.5-point favorite to a 4-point favorite in New York next week.
With so many guys hurt that have an impact on the spread, it is hard to tell where the 49ers true ranking is right now.
49ers (-4) @ Giants
This week, the 49ers did not head back to New York to play on the same field all these Week 2 injuries happened on. This time, they will be playing the Giants in Week 3.
The spread is already impacted by the number of injuries the Niners are facing. With key players on positions being affected, the important question comes, can they even win, let along with cover the 4-point spread.
Nick Mullens will most likely fill Garoppolo’s shoes as he listed as the number two quarterback on the 49ers team page. On the defensive side, guys like rookie Javon Kinlaw and DJ Jones will need to step up as the defensive line already being depleted.
Fortunately, there does seem to be hope, and San Francisco will bring in Ziggy Ansah to help with depth. The Giants at +4 is a good number as New York has kept games close the first two weeks. Saquon Barkley is out for the season for the Giants. However, he did not have much of an impact through the first two weeks, so that injury should be a was going into Sunday.
